How to… make homemade hobnobs

Well, HobNobs are delicious. And homemade ones are even better. Buttery, crumbly, and because they have oats in them, you can pretend they’re good for you! Plus they’re really easy and cheap to make.

Ingredients

  • 225g self raising flour
  • 225g sugar
  • 225g porridge oats
  • 225g margarine/butter
  • 1tbsp golden syrup
  • 1tbsp hot water
  • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Method

  1. Mix the flour, oats and sugar in a bowl
  2. Add any extra ingredients such as raisins/chocolate chips if you want
  3. In a pan, melt the margarine, syrup and water
  4. Once melted, stir in the bicarbonate of soda and then add to the dry mix
  5. Mix well, then make smallish balls (the recipe makes 35 – 50 depending on size), place on a greased tray and flatten slightly
  6. Bake at 180°c for 15 minutes until golden, then cool for a few minutes on the tray before moving to a rack.
  7. Spread a layer of chocolate on the top (if you’re making chocolate ones)
  8. Enjoy the results!

Once you’ve made your biscuits, here are five ideas to enjoy them…

  1. Have a bake-off or tea dunking experiments
  2. Pick a neighbour you haven’t met and take them some biscuits
  3. Join in International Homemade HobNob Celebration Day
  4. Parcel some up and post them to a friend
  5. Throw a tea party (with proper cups and saucers)
